WaimanguWaimangu is Maori for "black water". This area is 20 minutes south of Rotorua. It contains a number of sights worth seeing.
Some areas especially worth visiting are the Warbrick Terrace
and the Emerald Pools. Warbrick Terrace is a rolling formation of what looks
like multicoloured liquid rock. Its colour is the result of a mixture
of algae, iron oxide, hydroxide and silicate deposits.
The Emerald pools sit in a crater caused by the 1886 Tarawera eruption. They are located in some rather pretty bushland. The lush green colour of the pools is apparently the result of sphagnum moss. Also worth a look are Inferno Crater and Frying Pan Lake, a steaming body of water that is apparently named due to the crackling, sizzling sounds that it makes.
